Marc Giuffre

I made this because… I accidentally stumbled upon the local music scene earlier this year and was astonished to discover that there’s an incredible amount of talented musicians that I’ve never heard of before and an entire community around them. I started taking my camera with me to more shows and began taking more and more photos at the shows, to the point where it has now become purposeful and intentional. I’m submitting a collection of these photos in order to showcase this fun, intimate, blossoming scene that is happening in NYC which many people likely aren’t aware of, just as I wasn’t aware of it a year ago.

Creative Inspiration:

Larry Sultan’s “Pictures from Home” is an inspiration to me because he made the mundane look extraordinary by photographing his parents living their everyday retiree lives. Most of the photos are just his parents reading the newspaper, talking on the phone, lying in bed, practicing a golf swing, etc. but there is so much to derive and feel from these simple moments. It made me realize that any photo can be interesting despite its seemingly ordinary content.

Cobrasnake, a nightlife photographer, also inspires me due to his omnipresence. He seems to be everywhere and if you see him at an event, you know that you’re at the right place. His ability and ambition to attend so many events goes to show that if you want to take good photos, you have to go out and get them. Photo opportunities are happening every night in NYC, you just have to leave your apartment and sacrifice a good night’s sleep in order to get them.
